    -  Asian studies in Portugal – State of the art, by Miguel Santos Neves, Institute of International and Strategic Studies, IEEI, Portugal (2009)

Short history

Abstract from the source documents:

The field of Asian Studies in Portugal is characterized by a fundamental paradox. Although the Portuguese were the first Europeans to establish permanent and regular relations with Asia since the 16th century, Asian studies constitute a secondary and marginalized area of academic and scientific studies in Portugal (...)The development of structured Asian studies is a recent phenomenon in Portugal. The majority of institutions involved in this field were created from the late 1980s onwards, most of them in the course of the current decade.
