Asia, as both a migrant generating and migrant receiving region, offers rich experiences for migration and diaspora studies. Since the late 19th century there has been continuous movement of people across countries within the region as well as from Asia to other parts of the world due to colonial rule, warfare, political turmoil, the Cold War, and poverty in various places in Asia. Asian migration is not only large in scale, but also extremely diverse in experience. Large migrant groups to the West, such as the Chinese, Indians and Vietnamese have received much attention as settlers in other countries. Yet much recent research suggests they must also be understood as diasporic communities in continuous transnational movement. There are also many other smaller migrant populations, often minorities in their own countries, whose migration trajectories represent the interaction of very specific historical conditions as well as general global changes.

While the need for energy and water resources are increasing in the world, due to the uncertainty about the future of these resources, international cooperation on both regional and global levels is required. Especially in Asia where there are various developing countries; need for energy and water resources, food security, health, climate change, drought, global warming and pollution are major problems that Asian countries cannot solve by themselves. In order to resolve these issues long-term regional and continental cooperation is required.

The economic success of China over the last thirty years represents for some the biggest challenge yet to Weber's account of its culture, to his theory of capitalism and to the methods he employed in arriving at his account. But it also brings into question the self-image of the West and the idea of modernity. The conference SOAS is announcing will bring scholars from the social sciences and humanities together in a West/East dialogue central both to mutual understanding between China and the West and also to an exploration of the possible varieties of capitalism.

Members of the Max Weber Study Group of the British Sociological Association (BSA) and members of the China in Comparative Perspective Network (CCPN) at the LSE together with representatives of the two host institutions have formed a Programme Committee which makes this Call for Papers and invites proposals in the form of an abstract of a paper which should be submitted before March 1st 2013 using the online form.

The conference is an annual gathering of scholars interested in Asian affairs, especially their political and economic aspects. After the 2012 edition’s success, when over 30 foreign guests participated (among others, from Japan, China, Taiwan, USA, Russia, Germany, Slovakia, Czech Republic) we wish to continue the Lodz East Asia Meeting as an international event. This way it gives a valuable opportunity for the exchange of ideas between scholars from different countries. This is of significant importance to young researchers, who always make up a significant number of the participants. For them, it represents a chance to develop international contacts and become more familiar with different methodological approaches.

The academic and student mobility and migration of Chinese nationals have increased steadily over the last decades. Chinese students, teachers and scholars are now “familiar faces” in international higher education, especially in Australia, Europe and North America. According to the Chinese Ministry of Education, more than 100,000 Chinese have studied abroad annually since 2002, and the figure is still expected to rise in the near future.
